American dog ticks, sometimes called wood ticks, are found across most of the U.S., except the Rocky Mountain region. These brown ticks with grayish-white markings grow between 3/16” and 5/8” when engorged. They are oval-shaped and flattened, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
Though they generally feed on dogs, these ticks can bite humans and spread diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They are most active during spring and early summer. Regularly checking pets and maintaining a tidy lawn can help prevent infestations.
The Brown Dog Tick, with its reddish-brown color, is commonly found on dogs and thrives in warmer regions, including California. When dogs aren’t nearby, these ticks can also bite humans.
Adult ticks measure about 1/8″ in length but can expand to 1/2″ when engorged with blood. They have six legs as larvae and develop eight legs as nymphs and adults. Quickly removing ticks from pets is key to avoiding health issues. Regular inspections of your pets and keeping their surroundings clean can help control infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks are commonly found in shrublands and trails from Oregon to Baja California, making them present in Tierrasanta. These ticks are most active during cooler months, especially in April and May. Adults usually prefer large mammals such as cattle, deer, and horses, but they can also bite dogs and humans.
These ticks can transmit diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis is another concern for livestock. Approximately 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria responsible for Pacific Coast tick fever, which may be mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is found along the Pacific Coast and in British Columbia, serving as the main carrier of Lyme disease in these areas. They thrive in forests, grasslands, and areas near water, as well as scrub-shrub habitats. While related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, they are mostly located on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from December through early summer, while nymphs peak during the spring, particularly from April to June. Nymphs feed on small creatures like lizards and rodents, rarely biting humans or pets. Maintaining a well-kept yard and clearing out debris can help reduce the presence of ticks.
Tierrasanta Pest Control initiates its tick control process with a thorough inspection of your property. Our technician will identify tick-prone areas like tall grass, dense bushes, and shaded spots, ensuring all potential habitats are found.
We’ll also examine places where your pets frequently roam, as ticks often gather in these locations. This comprehensive inspection is crucial for developing an effective treatment plan tailored to your yard, ensuring it remains tick-free.
Our tick control process starts by discussing whether you need treatment indoors, outdoors, or both. For homes with pets, we generally advise treating both areas for complete protection. This helps us design a plan that fits your specific needs.
Our technician will inspect your yard to identify tick-prone areas. We treat up to half an acre using moisture-activated granules that offer lasting protection. If your yard is larger, we can cover additional areas for a nominal fee. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer to apply a focused treatment. This ensures that tick control is effective from the very first visit.
Two weeks after your first tick treatment, we offer a free follow-up to make sure no newly hatched ticks are present. Our technician will re-inspect the treated areas both inside and outside to verify that all ticks have been eliminated.
Treatments will be reapplied as needed to disrupt the tick life cycle and stop further infestations. Our aim is to keep your home and yard tick-free, providing a safe space for your pets and family.
We’re proud to serve Tierrasanta and its surrounding areas. Our team works diligently to ensure your homes and businesses remain pest-free. We care about these communities and always aim to deliver outstanding service and reliable results.
